Long tail keywords are basically 3-4 word uncommonly searched phrases that focus on very specific details of your products and services. Many different aspects of Internet marketing, such as search engine rankings and average sales per search can be positively affected by adding these simple phrases to your keywords. Using these keywords can benefit your site in a multitude of different ways.
For instance, if you have a company that specializes in unique gourmet catering, you will probably use something like “gourmet catering” as a keyword. While this is going to put you in the correct category, it might not affect your search engine rankings at all. Gourmet catering is a very highly sought-after service, with many different companies competing for the exact same business, so it is difficult to achieve high rankings with these keywords.
Though they are more competitive, you may still get 30 or so percent of your business and traffic from these popular keywords, which is certainly significant. More specific searches such as “kosher gourmet catering,” “vegetarian gourmet catering,” “vegetarian cocktail party catering,” “bat mitzvah party kosher catering,” may each only bring in about 5% of your business. The key to this theory is that if you have enough of these different long tail keywords, you can end up getting more business from the combined market of these keywords than the individual, and more popular “gourmet catering” search results.
With these longer phrases, you are still advertising and selling the same basic products, but you are focusing on much more specific consumers. Your rate of sales per search will also increase because the consumers who search for these specific products are already in the market to buy. Instead of catching people in the stage of learning more about a product, or simply shopping around, you’ll catch them on their last leg of their search: the purchase. It is important to sell these products and services to people who already want to buy them, while SEO is all about marketing and advertising your name, you do not want to ignore those consumers who are already interested in what you have to offer. It is important to use Long Tail keywords especially for your AdWords campaign, and you can even use a pay per click consultant to help you get things started.
